Field(s) of study : Flute, Piccolo Born : Singapore Degrees : Masters in Flute, Conservatoire Royal de Mons, Belgique Biography : Mr Alvin Chan is a freelance piccoloist and flutist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Sun Symphony Orchestra in Hanoi. In addition to his active performing career, Mr Alvin teaches flute and piccolo in Singapore to students of all levels, from primary school through university. He earned a Master’s degree from the Royal Conservatory of Mons, where he had the privilege of studying under the esteemed flutist Marc Grauwels and honing his piccolo skills with Peter Verhoyen. Their guidance was instrumental in shaping his musical identity and artistic vision. Known for his friendly and student-focused teaching approach, Mr Alvin aims to foster an engaging and nurturing learning atmosphere that promotes musical excellence, curiosity, and self-assurance. His dedication to both performance and teaching has established him as a respected figure within Singapore’s classical music community. Beyond the concert hall and classroom, Mr Alvin is an enthusiastic advocate for music outreach and education. He is a regular facilitator of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s Outreach Programme, Musical Excursions, a workshop series designed to introduce primary and secondary school students to the world of music. These interactive sessions explore foundational musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, and structure, while also guiding students in active listening, teamwork, and musical appreciation. Through engaging live demonstrations, fun games, and collaborative exercises, Mr Alvin helps participants develop a deeper understanding of music’s expressive power and its relevance to everyday life. His approachable manner and ability to connect with young audiences have made these workshops a meaningful entry point into classical music for many students. Mr Alvin also participates in outreach performances with the Singapore Lyric Opera, presenting commissioned works centered on Singapore’s rich cultural heritage. These performances, targeted at primary and secondary school audiences, support national education initiatives by fostering a sense of identity, pride, and historical awareness through music and storytelling. By bringing live opera and classical music into school settings, Mr Alvin and his colleagues bridge the gap between professional artistry and public accessibility. These programs aim not only to entertain but also to educate, using music as a tool to celebrate Singapore’s diverse traditions while inspiring the next generation of music lovers and cultural stewards.
